Custom tactics suggestion for realistic gameplay in FIFA 09!
In my previous post, I had talked about how some tweaking of the custom tactics for the opponent teams would make this game absolutely brilliant with variety and randomness. Thanks for your overwhelming response for that idea. As a result of your support, now I’m going to suggest you some custom tactic set ups for various types of opponents. My basic assumption is that you would be playing for a top team or a champions league team.
Relegation battlers: Let’s see how they normally play. Primarily, draw is a great result for them. They may not have matching skill or pace to weave an attack from back to front too often. They would go for route one football of hoofing it up to the target men or in the D-area in some hope. They may not be tactically sound in defending and organisation but they would make it up with spirited tackles and interceptions. They would defend in numbers while leaving very few in attack. They would cross a lot and given the opportunity, they’d rather shoot instead of wasting it with a hopeful further build up play. Build Up - Speed: 40 Passing: 85 Positioning: Organised. Chance Creation - Passing: 30 Crossing: 80 Shooting: 55 Positioning: Organised. Defence - Pressure: 35 Aggression: 75 Team width: 20 Defender Line: Cover.
In build-up, they’re slow and long. That means when they have the ball in their own half, they won’t hurry up the attack and that they use a lot of long balls. Because they’ll use long balls, their attackers would position themselves to receive the long passes, which might give you some space in the midfield. In chance creation, they pass safely, cross and shoot a lot. In defence, they won’t chase you when you’re in your half but will get involved as you get closer to your final third. They’re also very aggressive in winning the ball from you. They wouldn’t mind a crunching tackle. Defender line should be set to cover if you want a challenging game.
Mid-tablers: Must be pretty average in attack and should concentrate on defending. They might have one or two star players and the rest should be decent but may not be good enough. I’d make quicker than the relegation battlers in build up speed. I’ll make it 50. The passing in build up should be 70 which means both short passes and long passes but still more of the latter. In chance creation I’d expect them to take more risks in passing so that would be 50 and I’d keep the crossing at 80 and bring down the shooting to 40 as I think they are more comfortable on the ball than the relegation battlers. In defence, I’d bring down the pressure to 30 as it would help with a quicker build up play, if the ball is won. I’d keep the aggression at 75 as I think that’s the ideal setting for aggression across all teams. I can put the team width to 30 as the defenders could be a bit better and hence should be able to make up the lateral distance. Build Up - Speed: 50 Passing: 70 Positioning: Organised. Chance Creation - Passing: 50 Crossing: 80 Shooting: 40 Positioning: Organised. Defence - Pressure: 30 Aggression: 75 Team width: 30 Defender Line: Cover.
Euro-aspirants: These are good teams that may not have those five star players but still can give a great challenge to the biggies. They should have some skillful players and can be pacy. I’ll give them a 60 in build up play speed and passing in build up should be 55 or 60. This means they can play short passes as well as long passes. It’s more situational. The riskiness of passing in chance creation must be 65, which means they’ll go for the risky passes but they might have the players to back it up. Crossing should be 55 or 60 while shooting can be 50 or 60. Basically, they’ll rely less on crossing and more on passing and shooting. This could be different in various leagues, so I suggest you make you appropriate customisations. In positioning in chance creation, you can make it ‘free form’ for certain teams which would make the game lot more interesting and random. Pressure and aggression should remain as 30 and 75 respectively while the team width can be 40 or 45, which will help them cut down our crosses. I suggest you alwasy have the defender line as ‘cover’ across all teams. Build Up - Speed: 60 Passing: 60 Positioning: Organised. Chance Creation - Passing: 65 Crossing: 55 Shooting: 60 Positioning: Freeform. Defence - Pressure: 30 Aggression: 75 Team width: 40. Defender Line: Cover.
For the champions league teams, especially the so-called big teams, the custom tactics set up for build up and chance creation is almost perfect already. But since the defence sliders are messed up, you might have to change that alone for them. Once again, pressure can be 30 and aggression 75. For a team like Chelsea if you set the aggression slider to 75, they might be a massive challenge to your attackers, because they have a top class defence and most of the team could tackle rather well. The team width can be 50 for teams which uses wing backs and 40 otherwise.
If you don’t know already, there are only 28 slots for saving custom tactics. That’s a shame. Anyway, I’m using it this way. 3 slots for my team (Chelsea), 1 for relegation battlers, 1 for mid-tablers, 1 for Euro-aspirants and 18 other slots for specific top teams which are Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City (love ‘em or hate ‘em, you can’t ignore ‘em!), Real Madrid, Barca, Sevilla, Atletico Madrid, Valencia, Villareal, Inter, Milan, Juventus, Roma, Fiorentina, Bayern, Lyon and Porto. Now this leaves 4 empty slots which can be used for the in-game tactical changes.
So I’ll have unique tactic setups for the above mentioned top teams and the other teams in English, Spanish and Italian leagues would get one of the tactics of (a) relegation battlers (b) mid-tablers (c) euro aspirants. As long as I’ve the teams fixed in the premier league, la liga and serie a, I’m fine. These leagues account for 90% of my matches. This might have left some leagues untouched. That’s fine. Either I don’t use them or I’m fine with the occasional random match where I can run past the defence through the centre. May be, I’d be playing samba football by then that I’d not think of route ones!

Custom Tactics Values
P.S: The slider values are ased on my own opinions and preferences. Please change it for yourself if you wish. Don’t need to bash me but certainly we can have a matured discussion on what the sliders should be. But I have tested the above values and they work for me superbly.

Hey Tim
To change the custom tactics for the teams, you need go to ‘manage teams’ and click open the team you wish to change and hit ‘custom tactics’. There, if you follow my method, you need to edit those custom tactics like I have suggested and save them. Clear?

I’m really struggling with fifa 09 m8 and am started to play it less and less really. I like the mm a lot and that is what I mainly play. I started off playing semi-pro in 09 and soon got to grips with it winning 8-1 and other scores soon made this unrealistic so I turned to world-class and found that unenjoyable so I settled on pro and that gives me a good game sometimes.
I saw your thread on custom tactics and thought WoW this must the answer. What I’m getting bored with is that nearly every goal I score is the same, an odd header from the corner or a pass to my striker so he can run his heart out and beat the goalie, hardly variety though. I cannot score from outside the box at all, I’m good at hitting row z though. I use the ps3 and I give the shoot button the briefest of taps but it still goes over or straight to the goalies arms.
Still I moved on to applying all your tactics for all the teams in England, Italy, France, Germany, Holland, Spain and portugal but it still plays fast, I don’t see a lot of difference so I’m assuming I did something wrong. I went through every team in those leagues through manage teams and the tactics seemed to stick ok then i started a mm with my chelsea, I even did Chelsea but when I looked at their custom tactic it was set on default? How can I be sure that the other teams are playing with the custom tactics? I like the idea of editing each player but I haven’t the time to do that. What would be nice is a save game to download and start at the begining with all the tactics applied correctly, lol.
Any advice as soon I think I will move onto something else and just wait for fifa 10.

thanks a lot,
so I feel that the CPU often does not take realistic shots. They pass up open shots and sometimes run into the goalie instead of shoot. What should I adjust I any on the tactics sliders to make them a little more aggressive in their own third.
Thanks again
tim
what you gotta do is to play around with the custom tactics of your opponent. If you set the shooting to 40 or 50, it’s quite reasonable in terms of shots taken by the AI. If you set it to 80 or 90, they will have 30 shots of which 20 would just be useless pops. If you set it to 15 or 20, they’ll keep passing forever waiting the best moment to take the shot which may or may not arrive.
Just try it out.

what really annoys about this game is when someone slide tackles you and you go round them
then your player trips over the opponent on the floor
it is the dumbest piece of AI ever.
also the way the that you cant choose who marks who on corners
luca toni or ibrahimovic could be on the pen spot and javier mascherano is marking him.
Thirdly, if your players arent fast then they are crap on this game.
also im on legendary mode and i cant keep the ball for five seconds which is very unrealistic
have you got any tips for beating defenders because skills dont work on legendary you dont have enough time
it seems that every button u press the computer counters it by stepping in that direction…

I have read through all your blogs, I only play FIFA09 (xbox360) with MM - all your suggestions sound excellent, but will they work for me in MM? It will take me a long time to go through and set it up - I’m just concerned that in MM all the teams will revert back to their default setting.
Do you know if these custom settings work in MM?
Many thanks =)

Hello blue champ… I have been reading quite a lot of your blog.. It seems all the custom tactics settings are usefull to play realistic games with your friends in the room or against the CPU…
Is there any tactics settings that are usefull to taking the game online? Basicaly I am sick of all these players passing the ball to mid field, sending a striker on a run, and (assisted) through passing them the ball, over and over and over again.!!!!! It infuriates me to the point I can’t keep my cool enough to just run along side them and take it back (the ball). Seems as though my defenders run away from the ball/striker/midfielder…. I know one problem is applying to much pressure (holding X and square)…
Have you any suggestions for some tactics for this? (plus any methods for regaining the ball back quickly and easy?? - am I right that I should just cool it with the pressure buttons, untill I am closer to the ball?)
I’m pretty sure cover would be a good one under defence? And maybe bring the pressure slider down a bit??? Could organized instead of free form also help?
TIA

Ps… I am an “ex pro Evo player”. Should I just STFU and go and buy pes 2009?. I converted simply because the ball phsyics in FIFA 09 are the best I have seen since Winning 11 9. my favorite footy game.

i am sick of ppl choosing the same teams every time you play online. mostly its utd with ronaldo upfront because he is quick. i can still beat ppl who like to beat you with pace but it just gets boring very quickly. why do ppl not choose a more balanced side thats not one of the big guns?

You said in a later blog don’t put your shooting and build up speed above 50.
With that in mind, what should these 2 tactics be for the relegation battlers, mid-table, euro-aspirants, and top 4 teams?

hi bluechamp m8. i play fifa 09 in online leagues (english leagues) i could be doing with ur advice. I need a custom tactics set-up for attacking. My defencive setting is doing me ok just now but i struggle to find the net if i dont score first whereas if i could get a couple of goals up then i could revert back to my defencive tactics to close out the match and collect all 3 points. Any help would be great m8 .
Cheers Gman

i know right, 90 % of the ppl online pick united. STOP IT!!!!!!!!!!
16. United
well obviously UTD rule, and its not just because of ronaldo u know, utd actually do have a lot of fans… i use them online… i used to use the default one until i played against a guy using the ronaldo up front tactic, i found it kinda stupid of him, but he was wining 2-0 so i gave it a try and i won him 4-2…so yeah rly just go try it out,its not bad or anything…and if u get used to ronaldo ull get rly gd. And abot using like teams that arent that good, thats just stupid of u, i meen once a guy was using like a scottish team and 2ady a guy was using aston villa….even arsenal dont hold a candle to utd in this game, wich is pretty sad:S. anyways blu its gr8 that ur making these advice pages… gl and for the guy thats giving up on fifa 09, i advise him not to,instead go play online its more fun than any other online game:D

In reply to Dhekelian , if u have a problem shooting outside the box this all can orignate from in my opinion two things:
1) the speed at which the player is travelling 0 holding R2 whilst taking a shot is oe of the most stupid things u can do because ,unless your a world class player, theres no way your hitting the target . In which case i reccommend u let go of the R2 a few yards before u pull the trigger
2) the amount of pressure the player is under - this can affect the shot success rate massively, For this i just recommend u rethink where u are , dont pull the trigger and instead play it back and re work the opportuinity
For shooting always remeber to aim ur shots where u want them to go, i know this can seem obvious to the experienced players but there are still plenty out there who constantly hold the left analog in the direction they are running and the majority of the time this will be straight at goal . This obviously leads to the shot being straight at the keeper.
Also remember to use very little shot power as again this can cause your shots to as u say ‘hit row z’
Hope this helps
Btw if anyone fancies a match my gamer id is Canio16 , add me
19. David
in reply to united , if your playing online and you’re very high ranked u will not pick up any xp for versing lower ranked opponents so i reccomend going into the lobbys and finding some competition lol

hey i need some help with fifa 09, i play my younger brother whose always arsenal and im always chelsea, when he first got it i was beating him every game, running off defenders, passing straight thru it was easy, then suddenly every ball i played to his defenders he tackles them, and no matter what amount of defensive pressure i set my defenders cant tackle his forwards! its very wierd, aparently hes learnt some new defensive technique, something that im missing, i know holding down B will bring another defender to help, but when i do that it just opens up a gap in the defense and boom he scores again! any help?
21. arsenal fan
I have a similar problem - my games with friends online used to be competitive, then all of a sudden, every pass I play gets intercepted by his defenders. My guys just stand around waiting for the ball, while his defenders go after the ball, and it makes passing frustrating. And even if my guys receive and trap the ball, they just get run over by the defender without a foul, and my guy goes tumbling into the pitch. And even in full sprint, his defenders will catch up to my forwards - even if i had a big lead. But my defenders gets left in the dust - i know how to use the sprint button, but it is become ridiculous.
Is this some kind of setting i am missing? I have set up my own custom tactics, but I just dont see my defenders doing the same thing as his. My defenders dont charge the ball when my opponent is passing.
Any advice is appreciated!…..

I really find your custom tactics interesting. When I play a team I hate
how they don’t take chances when they get them and sometimes even just
dribble into the goalie without taking a shot on goal. Unrealistic
sometimes. hopefully these tactics will help.
This might sound dumb but how do I actually change tactics for CPU
contolled opponents? and save them? I would like to set these up similar
to your recommendations for various skill level teams.
thanks,
Tim
