The final solution for the defensive problems of FIFA 09!
The weakest part of FIFA 09 is the defence. The back line pushes up too much. They easily get overpowered and outmuscled. You get a feeling that a definite advantage is given to the attacking side over the defensive side. Everytime the defence pushes up unnecessarily and concedes a goal due to that, you get wild. ‘It’s not my fault’ is what you scream.
Now you want the defence to do what they’re expected to do - defend the goal. You want them to be in the right places at the right times. You don’t want them to leave spaces mindlessly. You want them to make it difficult for the attackers. You don’t want them to concede any cheap goals.
I’ve always said that the best way to improve FIFA 09 is tweaking - custom tactics and player attributes. The solution for a disciplined defence is also in tweaking custom tactics. The good thing about tweaking custom tactics is, it takes hardly 10 seconds, unlike player attribute editing. The other good thing is, you can use it ONLINE as well!!!
Ok, here is what you do.
In custom tactics, under BUILD-UP:
Positioning: Set this to ‘organised’. This positioning affects the movement of your players in your half of the pitch. This will have no impact on the randomness of your chance creation or in the final third. This is just for the own half positioning.
In custom tactics, under DEFENCE:
Pressure: Just bring this slider to the minimum. The least it would go to is a value of 1. What this would do is, the players won’t move up to pressure the opposition. You’ll find that your players allow the opponents to have the ball and you can nip it when it matters most. This does not mean they will stand still in their respective places. They would move forward as with the action zone but they would be more position conscious.
Aggression: This determines the tendency of the defence to commit tackles and fouls. This is more relevant for the teams where the AI controls all the players. As far as your team goes, no player would tackle unless you order them to do so. So, with this setting what happens is that the players get into a position where they only wait for your button press to tackle the opponent. By setting aggression to a low number, say between 30 and 40, your players will stay in their zones.
Team width: Set this to a low number, say, again between 30 and 40. This would mean the defensive back line would stay closer to each other in front of the goal. This is especially effective against opponents who play throughballs to the lone striker. With low team width setting, the lone striker of the opponent will be seriously hindered. The downside is that, there would be some space in the flanks which the opponents can use but still the crosses or cut backs can be managed because you have a crowded defence in the box to handle them.
Plus, always first line of defence must be the midfielders. Use the midfielders to defend and tackle. That would buy some time for the defenders to get back to their areas as per the above settings.
I tried these things today. I got to play a lot of intense, tight matches where really had to find ways to break the defence. This also meant both teams got a lot of time on the ball in the midfield. The midfielders really came into existence, orchestrating the attacks and making the killer passes to outfox the defence. Plus, play in LEGENDARY difficulty. That’s where teams play true to their strengths. The games in legendary are very challenging, random and fun.
Try this and let me know.

Great tips here m8. really helped me in defence.
only one one problem…i cannot keep any possession what so ever.
im in an online league and use a 2.5 star team called Alicante…. im also playing offline to try your tips and doing a league adelante using Alicante on Worldclass. However i cant get possession of the ball and even when i do have possession none of my players are about to pass to and i get closed down and tackled way to easily!
when attacking i can never find a winger. will have one attack and suffer 6 attacks from the AI.
defending crosses and corners is my worst part. how can i improve that?
hope you can help
thanks.

Anyone know of summer online leagues forming? I usually just play ranked quick matches, but would love to do a league setup, too.

Hi, Congratulations to the site owner for this marvelous work you’ve done. It has lots of useful and interesting data.

If anyone wants to play a ranked match, Maselaw is my XBox Live name. I don’t go for the kickoff shot, and I don’t usually celebrate goals or watch replays (unless it’s an overhead kick or something), so a good, sportsman’s game is welcome.

For those who wish to join an online league, we have one at http://www.xbox360fifa.co.uk We are in the middle of a few changes at the moment, but will be running a league throughout the summer just for fun. This is until FIFA 10 comes out then we will have a league structure in place with FA Cup and maybe Carling Cup. So feel free to take a look and decide for yourself.
Oh yeah, cheers OP great tips for the defending, I will try them out and see if I can improve on my skill level 2 lol.
I agree with all of your analysis. These defensive tactics really make defending easier and more fun. I play mostly online, mostly with Aston Villa. They are set up perfectly to defend well and hit with a speedy counter. I have 1504 skill points, but a pretty poor 55% winning percentage. With that background, a couple of questions.
(1) I do find that my defense is mostly broken down when I have actually defended well. I rarely get beat on the dribble, but I find that way too often, I make a tackle, but the ball somehow squeeks through or goes right to another attacker. If this were the luck of the game, I’d expect the situation to benefit me on the attack as well, but it rarely does. This tells me I may be doing something wrong.
(2) It’s tough to get a clearing header on corners. I can usually get my head to the ball first, but the power is lacking, and I almost always have to fight for the second ball on the edge of my area. There, it is even harder to get a clearing header. I find my opponents, no matter what they’re skill level, do not have this problem, and I rarely can challenge for a second ball on my own corners. Is that a formation issue?
(3) 50-50 balls in the air: I find it most beneficial to use the first touch/control stick. Pressing the B or X when the ball is in the air (especially when fighting for a long ball over the top) and it is 50-50 usually results in a wiff. It works better, but I’m still losing too many 50-50s. Any thoughts?
Thanks.
